Holy cow this is a cool interactive map. Spend a few minutes playing around with the filters in order to get a really good sense of the source, timing and velocity of immigration in the United States.

Unfortunately, there's no country filter for Portugal, so I'll just have to lump my ancestors in with the rest of Western Europe.
