Growing up, I practically memorized the entire collection of Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side cartoons. A decade later, I still read comic strips every day, but now they reside on the web and have a very different tone and style. If you've never read a web comic before, you might want to check these out:
xkcd
This is the first web comic I read and it's still one of my favorite. It's written by a former NASA engineer who describes it as "a webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." I can't really improve on that description except to say that sometimes xkcd makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me sad, and other times it impels me to search Wikipedia to learn about fractals. (hint: If you hover the cursor over the image, it reveals an extra message)
Perry Bible Fellowship
This one hasn't been updated in a while, but it's beautifully drawn and extremely funny in a very sick way. It's definitely worth clicking the "Random" button a few times.
Cyanide and Happiness
Another artistically simple comic that packs a serious punch, Cyanide and Happiness can make you laugh via shock value, piquant observations or biting sarcasm. This may have supplanted xkcd as my "go to" comic. Check out today's.
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal
I don't read this one as regularly as the others, but it's still quite good.
Garfield Minus Garfield
This one made the rounds as a meme last year, but it's still around and it's just as much an existential trip as ever. Don't overthink this: it's just Garfield comics with Garfield photoshopped out. Why would anyone bother to do that, and more importantly, why would anyone read it? Don't knock it until you try it. Poor Jon.
